In a speech to the Indian community in France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced good news for Indian tourists: they will soon be able to pay using UPI in France. To start, visitors from India will be able to purchase tickets in rupees to climb the Eiffel Tower’s first and second floors in Paris.
UPI will be used in France, India and France have agreed. Indian tourists will now be able to pay in rupees because it will start from the Eiffel Tower, according to PM Modi. The simplicity of paying in Indian rupees will soon be available to Indian tourists visiting France.
The launch of UPI in France gives Indian travellers interesting new options. With UPI, they won’t have to rely on heavy currency cards or carry a lot of cash. Instead, customers can easily make payments through their mobile devices.
PM Modi had fruitful conversations with Senate President Gerard Larcher and his French counterpart Elisabeth Borne while he was in France. The discussions centred on enhancing India and France’s extensive cooperation and long-standing strategic alliance.
The UPI system in India merges several bank accounts into a single mobile application, enabling users to access different banking functions, conduct quick financial transfers, and pay suppliers. Additionally, it makes peer-to-peer collect requests possible, which may be paid for and arranged at one’s convenience.
In April 2016, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) launched UPI as a pilot programme with the participation of 21 member banks. Since then, UPI usage has significantly increased. Now, even tiny merchants like tea dealers accept UPI payments for sums as low as Rs 5 or Rs 10.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NPCI and Lyra, a quick and safe online payment system in France, was inked in 2022. Additionally, PayNow, the payment system in Singapore, and UPI struck a contract this year to allow cross-border transactions between the two nations.
Bhutan, Nepal, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have already embraced the UPI system. UPI services are currently being discussed by NPCI International with the US, several European nations, and West Asian nations.
Another significant step in India’s ambitions to spread the use of its cutting-edge payment system has been reached with the launch of UPI in France. It improves convenience for Indian visitors while also fostering closer links between France and India in the area of digital payments.
